“This year’s theme is ‘Reading Rocks’, which we think fits in very well with the community,” she said adding it was easy to tie this year’s theme to Grizfest, dinosaurs and the mining industry.
The purpose of the reading club is to keep children reading over the summer holidays but in a fun way.
“Reading is like any other skill. If you don’t use it, you lose it. We recommend children read or get read to everyday. It doesn’t have to be very long. We recommend just 15 minutes a day and to make it fun,”
Bray said. “Children are a very appreciative audience. And forgiving.
If you make a mistake, they don’t care. They love having stories read to them and they will giggle along with you.”
The Summer Reading Club runs every weekday afternoon and is completely free with story times, activities and crafts. Bray encourages people who have out of town visitors come and join in the fun for an afternoon.
There are no age restrictions for the Summer Reading Club. There are groups for different age groups from babies to teens. The teen club is mostly online but there are competitions, chatrooms and many prizes for teens who participate. For all children, there are weekly prizes and grand prizes. The grand prizes will be handed out at the end of the Summer Reading Club.
“Some people call the prizes bribery. I call them incentives,” laughed Bray.
“We have crafts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and activities on Wednesdays and Fridays. And we have story times every weekday. We also have two summer students, Marina McKay and Krista Trim, who help run the show.”
The Summer Reading Club starts weekdays at 3:00 p.m. Bray said the time is good since children’s swimming lessons end at 3:00 p.m. so children can get cleaned up after swimming and take part in the Summer Reading Club.
“The kids have a lot of fun and go home tired,” Bray laughed.
The Summer Reading Club will finish with a big celebration on Friday, August 20 at 3:00 p.m. at the library. Bray said everyone is welcome.
Bray also said all the reading records have to be turned in to the library by Wednesday, August 18 to be eligible to win prizes.
“We will give out all the big prizes such as medals, t-shirts and other prizes, during the wrap up celebration,” Bray said.
