CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
TOMBOY TOOLS Michele Burton

Wednesday December 17, 2008

Michele Burton is the local distributer for the enemously successful line of “TomBoy Tools”, a do-it-herself (DIH) line designed specifically for women and in hot colours of pink or blue. Ladies can be sure that their tools will not disappear out the back door with their significant others, or if they do, that pink hammer is pretty easy to spot!
PICK UP A HAMMER AND LET YOUR PONYTAIL FLY!
Have you ever been faced with a home maintenance project and didn’t know the next step to take? Have you ever picked up a tool and weren’t sure how you were going to use it?

TOMBOY TOOLS® is a tool and home improvement company for women, by women, providing a unique range of private-labelled hand tools for home improvement projects. Tomboy Tools is very different from the run-of-the-mill home improvement retailers. The Company advocates education and have an internal culture that supports women in becoming confident, competent homeowners and DIHs – Do-It-Herselfers! This means giving women the proper tools and techniques to create a more functional, beautiful and liveable space.

Tomboy Tools Canada designs and sells tools made specifically for women: they’re lighter, smaller and easier to use. They are also ergonomically corrected to suit a woman’s body: the hammer, for instance has a heavier head to compensate for less upper body mass, that men tend to have. And they are PINK! The chance of these tools disappearing into the shop, pickup or husband’s jobsite are pretty remote. They stay with you.

Peter Mandeville of Toolbelt Jobs Inc. attests to the quality and prices. He also commented “Thank goodness they also come in blue so that I can use them on the jobsite”.

A Pink Hammer campaign held in support of breast cancer research in 2006 was wildly popular, so a full line was launched in 2007.

Tomboy Tools also supports Habitat for Humanity.
Michele said “When I first saw the tools I thought “Wow!” And then absolutely everyone I talked with said that they wanted the pink tools.”

“Personally, I am not a salesperson.” “There is a very large box of at home party jewellery sitting in a back closet that will verify this claim.” “The expectation is for home parties but I definitely welcome people just to come to me.” “However, if you want to party ….remember tool parties can be simple or elaborate.”

If you decide to have a Tomboy Tool party, Michele even has some extra special drink and snack suggestions for you. “Drinks suggestions coffee, tea and wine or, say! What about cocktails such as Harvey Wallbangers or Screwdrivers? I recommend snacks such as nuts ‘n’ bolts; and be sure to wear your pink hardhat.”

Below are some of the types of parties Michele could do at your home:

The most popular type of party is Tool School 101, with hands-on demonstrations, games and prizes.

“Smarter” tools, such as the one-armed hammer, tape measures come with fractions printed in numbers on the “hash” marks, each one-eighth of an inch apart.

Michele’s PINK tools come in various sizes and kits, and they even come in Blue if you really want Blue.

Hammers come with rubber grips, in three sizes: 16 oz., which is standard-sized but with an ergonomic grip, elongated and narrowed; 13 oz.; and 8 oz., perfect for small jobs around the house.

A “super-stepper” tool kit eliminates the need for a stepladder and contains 17 tools and safety items; it weighs 6.8 kg (15 lbs.) and costs $159.95. The Tomboy Tools Pink Traveller opens up like an old-fashioned doctor’s kit and costs $94.95.

So, whether you are a girlie-girl or a tomboy, Michele suggests you “pick up a hammer, and let your ponytail fly.”

Michele I don’t think there is a store in Tumbler Ridge that sells ladies tools, and definitely not pink ones. We welcome Tomboy Tools as a Chamber of Commerce Member, and being a gardener myself, I have even saw some of those tools that I want. We wish you all the best with your PINK and BLUE tools, and will see you at a party somewhere.
