If Owen Taylor has a dream in his life it is this: to play in net for the Washington Capitals. And at the tender age of eight, Taylor is already taking the next step towards realizing that dream.

Taylor was invited to try out for the North Country Stars AAA Novice hockey team in Grande Prairie. There were about 60 or 65 kids trying out for the team, but Taylor was one of the 17 to actually make the cut. Now, he and his teammates will spend weekends over the next month practicing and playing in tournaments across Alberta.

Last month the BC Teacher’s Federation voted 73% in favour of stopping volunteering at schools as part of their continuing labour issues with the BC government.
The vote cast a pall over school sports, as many school sports are coached by teachers.

However, BC School Sports, the body responsible for high-school sports programs around the province, announced late last week that, while provincials for sports like golf and mountain biking were cancelled for the season,  “the 46th Annual Subway BC High School Track and Field Championships will proceed as scheduled on June 1 and 2, 2012 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.”

Tumbler Ridge’s Wolverine Nordic and Mountain Society is once again hosting this popular weekly event as part of its drive to promote healthy lifestyles. Choose between the “hilly” or the “flat” options, each about two kilometers long. The interesting and vigorous hilly route leads up some steep inclines and then back down Suicide Hill to the finish. The Tumbler Ridge Community Centre Aquatic Centre will be closed for much of the month of April. Staff will be doing everything possible to re-open as soon as possible. It is important, though, to close to completely clean the insides of the main pool, leisure pool, and hot tub. The drains get cleaned as do the lines and sand filters. All of this is important for your health.

Today, April 2, 2012 began with a lot of excitement. I was going to prepare my favourite moose stew and pastry for our evening meal. I carefully prepared the meat and seasoned it with my best spices—the meat smelled and looked edible already. I placed the roaster in the oven at 7:20 am and turned the heat to 300 degrees. I had many things on my agenda for today but nothing was more important than preparing and cooking our favourite meat dish—my wife was especially looking forward to the brown and crispy pastry.

It started with a simple gesture. Sean Doyle, teacher and athletic director at Mobile Central High in St. John’s Newfoundland, wanted to add a girls’ division to the David Emberley Memorial Basketball Tournament.

The event had been boys-only since the inaugural tip-off eight years ago, but there were different factors at play this year.

David’s little sister, Sarah, plays with the Mobile girls’ team and is graduating. Doyle and the organizers thought it would be fitting for her to play in the tourney that remembered her brother. The former Mobile player and grandson of Fern Emberley Iles drowned nine years ago this June.

The Community Centre and Tumbler Ridge hosted International Women’s Day which was officially celebrated world-wide on March 8.  In Tumbler Ridge however, International Women’s Day events were spread out between March 2 and March 10.

The fun began on March 2 with the comedy of Sheila Norgate. The show was called Chin Straps and other Remedies. There was about 85 folks in attendance, including a couple guys. March 10 was the big day. As in 2011, the Community Centre partnered with TR CARES and APCRS and provided a full day of activities and events for women. I think all those who attended had a great day. A great big thanks to Rose Colledge whom coordinated the week of events. Our very own Peggy Holden from the Community Centre assisted Rose throughout the week.

On Wednesday February 29 Adam Court of Teck Resources brought in a Kern Swiss E1 Theodolite with DT502 Electronic Distance Measurement as a donation for the Community Centre Museum.  He actually brought three, which will soon be on display. The instrument was accepted on behalf of the museum by Dr Charles Helm and Jim Kincaid. Adam Court also very generously provided the following write up on the instrument, below.

The Instruments that were donated to the Tumbler ridge Museum Society are Kern Swiss E1 Theodolites. With the addition of the Electronic Distance Meter “DM502”, the instrument is a complete angular and distance measuring unit (also Known as a Total Station).  This was one of the first electronic recording Total Stations made. The Kern Swiss E1 was first introduced in 1970 at a trade show as a concept. The Kern Swiss E1 came into full production in mid 1970s to 1983. The Kern Swiss E2 replaced the production of the E1 in 1983–84.
