Beaverlodge Area Cultural Society is hosting an art exhibit through the month of July featuring pieces by local painter and business owner, Mila Lansdowne.
Lansdowne titled the exhibit The Messengers and it includes 23 pieces of artwork from large silk banners, to smaller prints and peace-scarves.
The core theme is mainly expressed in six 30 by 42 inch silk-art banner paintings. Each silk banner represents a specific area of Lansdowne’s philosophy of peace and happiness – inner peace, vitality, joyous life, experience, personal growth, and inspiration.
“The exhibit represents the most recent stage of my artistic development,” she said. “I consider myself a peace philosopher. A peaceful world is possible when we become peaceful as individuals.”
Lansdowne describes how her artwork explains these philosophies by saying “as in life, what you’ve done or painted can not be removed; all so-called mistakes are unexpected calls for the painter’s creativity to work them into a new creation.”
She also explains that the paintings magically attract the viewer’s attention to hidden empowering words painted onto the silk canvases.
“I observed the visitors at the opening and the enthusiasm they displayed as the words started to show was very rewarding for me.”
The specific skills used to create silk banner paintings can be taught to any age group, which Lansdowne does in workshops and annual outdoor retreats.
Debbie Ducharme of the Beaverlodge had signed up for one of Lansdowne's womens retreats in 2010 and later sent her an offer to have her pieces shown, making this Lansdowne's first art exhibit in Canada.
“I feel contentment regarding the show,” Lansdowne said. “This is me – clear like a crystal.”
Originally from Germany, Lansdowne has been a Tumbler Ridge resident for ten years and has been silk painting since 1999 after an unexpected reunion with a Czech artist and friend.
Running from July 3 until July 28, all pieces are for sale through Lansdowne or the Beaverlodge Gallery.
